COMMITMENT TO SAFETY
NSC’s first priority is always to the safety of all individuals present.
Swimming ability is required for participation. Rowing is a water sport and it's important that you feel confident in the water in case of an emergency. All students must take and successfully complete the Swim Test (swim 100 yards, tread water for 10 minutes) prior to going out on the water. If you have participated with a swim/dive team in the past two years, or have completed a high school swim class requiring mastery of these skills, a coach or teacher may sign-off on our swim test. Additionally, if you have earned a lifeguard or SCUBA certification within the last 5 years, you may submit evidence of the certification in lieu of the swim test form.
How do I complete the swim test?
You may complete the swim test at any pool or lake that is convenient for you. Bring rowing clothes that you can swim in (tight shorts and a t-shirt) and our Swim Test Form for the lifeguard to sign when you complete the test.
The Glenview Park District, Wilmette Park District, and some YWCAs have administered tests for our athletes in the past.
Participants will be required to wear their own personal flotation device (life vest) while on the water until they submit a completed swim test form. Loaner personal flotation devices may be available.
All water activities entail some risk. NSC takes precautions to mitigate risks, including but not limited to teaching rowing safety before permitting athletes to go on the water, requiring a swim test, having a coach accompany athletes in a launch boat whenever rowers are on the water, and ensuring first-aid and CPR certified staff are present during all NSC activities.
NSC requires all Junior rowers to submit a liability waiver signed by the rower and her parent or guardian. You may download a printable copy of the waiver for your records here. For record-keeping purposes we require waivers to be completed via the DocuSign form in your rower’s iCrew account.
